The year of the Rebel?

Will the next 12 months be the year of the Rebel? Baseball is one game away from the CWS and all the preseason magazines have the football team ranked in the top 10 with a possible BCS bowl game. Basketball looks strong. So will this finally be the year that Ole Miss dominates the SEC in all major sports? Time will tell but for now, let's book our ticket to the CWS.

Top 10 things to look forward to

As we await the next era in Ole Miss football, here are 10 things to look forward to:

(10) Names on Uniform- A welcome change back to pre-O era.

(8) The O & D Lines- Our best group in a long time and perhaps the best in the SEC this year.

(7)The Presidential Debate- The world will be focused on Mississippi and Ole Miss.

(6)The Jumbotron- The largest in the SEC (at least until October).

(5)The new basketball practice facility- A 46,000 square foot facility that should help the Rebels greatly in recruiting.

(4) The remodeled larger OU Stadium- The Baseball stadium gets a major upgrade.

(3) Jevan Snead- Finally, a quality QB.

(2) J. Powe- The stud finally gets to play.

(1) The Houston Nutt era begins- Back to our winning ways.

Thanks for everyone's patience during the Hotty Toddy Blog blackout. I am glad to say that HTB is back.

Some thought....

I am a bit disappointed with the men's basketball team. After a brilliant start, we have gotten into a terrible slump. Yet, we can still finish strong. My hope is still that we will still make the Big Dance, despite looking unlikely at this time. Bottom line, we are young. Despite the slump, I am extremely happy with the direction the program is heading.

Baseball....

10 Things to Feel Good About

Yes, Football is king in the south but fortunately for us there are other sports at Ole Miss. And in almost every other sport we are succeeding. Let's take a look at 10 things we as Rebel fans have to feel good about.

Baseball--

• This year's class is the #25 class in the nation. (Collegiate Baseball).
• One of only two schools in the country to host a regional in each of the last 4 season
• Advanced to the Super Regionals in the last three seasons
• Most SEC wins in the past 5 years in the conference
• Only school to post wining record in league since 2002
• Upgrading stadium to one of the best in the country

Basketball--

• Andy Kennedy in his first season won the West.
• Season ticket sales are up and the excitement is in the air for the first time in several years.
• A new Basketball practice facility is in the works.

Volleyball--

• First NCAA appearance in school history last year.
• Poised to make a second appearance in the NCAA with a current record of 18-5, 8-4 SEC.

Women's Basketball--

• Elite 8 appearance last season.
• Renee Ladner Era begins.
• OOC schedule includes teams from each major conference.

Tennis--

• Ole Miss returns 7 of our 8 top players from last year.
• Six straight SEC West titles
• Sweet 16 last year and ended the season with a #7 ranking.

Soccer--

• Three SEC West titles
• Three NCAA appearances in the past 5 years

Track & Field--

• Both Men's and Women's teams finished the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championship with their highest rankings in school history. (Men finished 12th, Women 27th)
• Kirui won the national championship in the Men's 3,000 meter Steeplechase.

Golf--

• Ole Miss men have won back to back tournaments for the first time since 1985.

Campus--

• Our campus is one of the most beautiful in the country. The beauty, safety and host city all make Ole Miss an easy sell to recruits.

Ed Orgeron. Great former assisant coach who was instrumental in leading the trojan defense, namely the d-line towards the current Trojan Dynasty. Think Mike Patterson, Sean Cody, Kenechi Udeze, Omar Nazel, as some of the guys he helped make it big. Some of which are in the NFL right now. I actually root for Ole Miss because of Coach O. --GeauxTrojans

Feelings? I don't know if I have ever seen them play. Sure, a few highlights, but I don't believe I have ever watched an entire game, or even an entire half, of Ole Miss football.--USCTrojanDave

Ole Miss can go as far as the coaching can take it. Its in the middle of the south, so recruiting shouldn't be that big of a problem, even if Mississippi isn't a total hot bed for top recruits. But if a coach can manage to land solid talent from the neighboring states and keep the top talent at home, any SEC team can find success. It will be harder now with Urban Meyer building Florida, and Saban running BAMA now. But still, those programs were a bit down and good coaching is/will turn them around.I know Coach O is popular because he came from USC, but i don't think he is the answer. Hopfully he can turn it around this year though, and get Ole Miss going in the right direction. Down the road, if they develop into a solid team i would love for USC to take them to the cleaners.--TrojanJP

The SEC spends so much time trying to claim to be the best, I have begun to susptec that even SEC supporters don't believe it. All that talk is b.s. It's one of the four remaining major conferences, along with the Big10, Big12 and Pac10.--USCTrojanDave

I think the SEC is the best conference in the country right now, and I plan on seeing games involving LSU, Auburn, Florida, MSU (only because of who they are playing), Tenn, 'Bama and possibly UGA. No offense to Ole Miss, but they just aren't relevant right now--WhiteLightning8

Great conference. Historically, one of the best although a lot of their fans give the Pac 10 a lot of trouble in terms of trolling and flaming our message boards. PAC-10 is really good conference. Most all teams field a pretty competitive team on a yearly basis, much like the SEC. Obviously So. Cal has been the belle of the ball here lately, but they got lucky last when playing Washington last year. That was a great game. ASU played USC down to the wire, also. I think there is a lot of parity between BOTH the PAC-10 and the SEC, more so than any other of the conferences.--JohnTHErebel8er

My company landed Boeing as an account and I speat a month in Seattle in October (don't get me started on the weather!!) and it was the middle of football and not much energy or excitement at the sports bar I went to to watch my rebels play. Recently I wrote a series of blogs on how Ole Miss is perceived in the Big Ten. I had many request from my blog readers to interview fans from the Pac 10. Ask and you shall receive. I've started out with two California Pac 10 teams.


UCLA
Ole Miss recently played UCLA in baseball in both Oxford and LA. The Bruins and the Rebels have never met in football. Oxford and LA are 1,876 miles apart.

(1) What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Ole Miss?

The very first thing that comes to mind when I think about Ole Miss are the names Jeremy McGee and Ed Oregeron. I remember there was some recent (or maybe not so recent) controversy over the use of the Confederate flag at your school. Otherwise, Ole Miss isn't really on my radar much--CalPolyBruinFan

No upside at all and I wouldn't want to give them any more recruiting exposure in LA. No compelling reason to play them in any sport. I also agree with GoBruinz that SEC fans tend to be very provincial in their views on sports. While I can name Ole Miss' Heisman Trophy Winner, how many Ole Miss fans can name the Bruins' heisman trophy winner? Sports Illustrated did a piece a month or so ago listing their selection of the top 10 athletes in Bruin history. Funny thing, the Bruins' Hesiman trophy winner and 2 Wooden Award winners didn't make that list. What is even more amusuing, the argument on who should be in and who was left out, no one really argued that those three should be on the list. --Hiero

(3) Would you like to play us in football or basketball in the future?

It would be big news if Stanford played Mississippi in football. Stanford has never played an SEC school during the regular season. We played Alabama, LSU and Georgia in bowl games and we played Arkansas in 1970 but they were in the Southwest Conference then. Tank Williams, a 2002 graduate of Stanford, an All American and one of the defensive leaders on two of Stanford's most accomplished teams of the last 30 years (1999 and 2001), is from Mississippi (Bay St. Louis). If Stanford could recruit more players of that caliber from the state of Mississippi, you can bet that we would love to play the Rebels in football. --StanmanMark

Stanford has never scheduled a regular-season football game against an SEC school (other than Tulane when it was in the SEC). I don't expect Stanford to schedule an SEC school in football, except perhaps Vanderbilt.--terry2

I would love for Stanford to play you or any SEC team in the future. The reason Stanford won't in football is that a game against an SEC team would decimate the Stanford squad. We might be able to play one game against an SEC team, but then we wouldn't have any healthy bodies left for the rest of the season. --ajpaly

Let's be honest here, the SEC is the toughest football conference in the nation. They beat up on each other. It's also a very good baseball conference (LSU won 3 or 4 straight CWS recently) and an underrated basketball conference (Florida the past two years and LSU in Final 4 two years ago). --ajpaly

never been but I hear that the gameday experience involves copious amounts of alcohol; since SEC teams play many games in the evening, this allows more time to get drunk and disorderly before the game. Got to have something to do to divert from the performance on the field (definitely something in common with Stanford).--StanmanMark

Q & A with Chuck Rounsaville from the Ole Miss Spirit

Chuck Rounsaville of the Ole Miss spirit took a few moments to answer some questions for the Hotty Toddy Blog:

1) How long has Ole Miss Spirit been going on? (Both Internet and magazine)

25 years printed publication; 9 years on Internet.

(2) What's the best part of your job?

I consider myself about as lucky as anyone I know. As a lifelong Ole Miss fan (my Dad played football at Ole Miss in the early 1930s), I get to make a living following something I'd pay to follow. I don't know how much luckier someone could be. Besides that, I doubt I'm smart enough to make a living doing anything else!

(3) Who is your favorite person in the Ole Miss Athletic department to interview?

I don't really have a favorite. Everyone at Ole Miss is extremely good to me and The Ole Miss Spirit. We have a good working relationship with everyone over there - coaches, players and administrators - and that makes every interview special to me. Coach O is a good interview because he's open and honest, has a good sense of humor and his drive to excel surfaces with every interview. Andy Kennedy is a good interview because he's quick-witted and wants good publicity, which I think we provide, because he knows it will help his program. Mike Bianco is a good interview because he is passionate about his sport and his program. And the list goes on.

(4) Which player has been or is your most favorite to interview?

Too many to name just one. Deuce, Stew Pat, P-Willie, Eli, Cory Peterson, Broc Kreitz, Eli Anding, Walker Jones, Shawn Cobb, Nate Wayne, Todd Sandroni, John Darnell, Romaro Miller, Andrew Wicker all stand out, but so do many others. Corey Actis is fun to interview on the current team. . . Again, I have been fortunate enough to have interviewed them all and they all brought something to the table.

(5)What's one thing you wish Ole Miss fans would consider before posting?

That we are all Rebels. We may support differently, but at the end of the day, we all love the Red & Blue.

(6)Are there any changes coming up for Ole Miss Spirit?

We hope we are constantly evolving, but we have no "hard" plans for big change. We try to adjust to what our subscribers want as we go, where the changes are sometimes not even noticeable.
