Welcome to Ole Miss Houston. Please stay awhile. The Houston Nutt era opened today with a 41-24 thrashing of Memphis. The Rebel offense went wild for the first time since Eli. Snead's start was solid and will get better. Hopefully this bunch of Rebels will go bowling again for the first time AE!

What are Memphis fans thinking about this Saturday's game? I stopped by a Memphis message board and asked the questions below. This year I received very few responses. Perhaps they are not as excited. Here is a link to last years blog.

Strength: Wide receivers, Offensive Line, RB (Miami 4 year Transfer) - QB - #7 ranked HS QB in the Nation and Defensive line.-griffin

Our most obvious strength is our unbelievably deep group of WR's. If Arkelon Hall can get the ball to them, we're going to light up the scoreboard every Saturday. Also, believe it or not, our defense should be much improved in 2008. I truly feel that DC Tim Walton will get things right on the defensive side of the ball in a hurry. As for weaknesses, our offensive line is getting painfully thin.-HLT2011

(3) What do you think about the Ole Mis v. Memphis series?

I like it cause I feel we are basically on the same level now. You see how I say now. I know Ole Miss owns the series but to say either team has dominated recently is just ridiculous. -GoTigersGo10

A bit stale but good to have - have grown to know we are now as good so the excitement to play the rebels is not there anymore - ready to move on to a greater challenge-griffin

It'd be a lot of fun if it weren't for Rebel fans. When it comes to the actual games, they're usually extremely competitive and always fun to watch. But dealing with Rebel fans, especially in Oxford, makes it just about impossible to enjoy the day.-HLT2011

Much better than what the rebels had - but the reality is that Mississippi had to hire someone who failed at a middle tier SEC school - who was about to get fired. Top tier SEC teams would never even consider such an option.-griffin

Ole Miss has played on four Sept. 15th's. (1-2-1). In 1973, Ole Miss traveled to Columbia, MO. The Rebels lost to the Tigers 0-17. In 1979, Ole Miss started the season with a victory over Memphis State in Memphis by a score of 38-34. Ole Miss tied Arkansas in 1984, 14-14, in Little Rock. Finally in 1990, Ole Miss lost to Auburn in Jackson, 14-20.

I have a headache. Watching a full game on my computer was not easy! Watching us blow a big lead was even more difficult. However, I'm not worried.

First games are usually error filled. We are Memphis's biggest game of the year and they get fired up for our game. It's time to put this game behind us and move on to Missouri.


I watched the Mizzou, Illinois game briefly. There is no doubt that Missouri has a talented offense and will give us fits. However, I wasn't impressed with the defense. They lost some key players and they let Illinois put up 34 points. I think it will be a much closer game than last year.


On a side note, I'm a big App State fan now. My Michigan fan neighbors are in pain tonight!

Ole Miss v. Memphis will be on CSS tomorrow at 2:30 CST. Since CSS is very limited, I wanted to let everyone know that the game can be viewed on CSTV.com.

Are you Ready?

It's Football Eve. We've been waiting a long time for tomorrow and it's almost here. The possibilities, the what if's, the chest pounding and the expectations will soon be replaced with reality.

There has been a lot of discussion on the message boards on how the Rebels will do this year. Many feel that with our tough schedule we will yet again be bowless at season end. Others, myself included ,see us as being a bit underrated. Will this be the year we win 6 and head back to Shreveport? I say YES.

Win 6, against who, you ask. Well let me tell you.

We will beat Memphis, Vandy, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern St & Miss. State. We will also beat at least one of the following teams at home: Missouri, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas or yes even LSU.

That's my Football Eve Prediction.

It's time Rebel fans. Game week is upon us. Before we hit the field and take on those Tigers, I thought I would take a look at our schedule for some interesting tidbits.

This year if you are not sure who we play, your best bet is to guess either a bulldog or a tiger and you will probably be right. We face off against four tiger teams and three bulldog teams. We also play some Demons, Commodores, Gators, Elephants and Pigs.

Our overall record against all the teams we play this year is W259 L 272 T 16. We've played Mississippi State the most at 103 times and Northeastern State the least at one game. We've played Memphis more times than we've played Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas or Auburn.

We play seven game at home and five away. Our closest away game is at Memphis (81 miles)while the greatest distance we will travel is to Athens, GA (409 miles).

Forward Rebels: The Pride of the South begins practice this week

Football season is just around the corner and soon the sounds of the Pride of the South will be flowing through campus. Parts of the Band reported to Oxford yesterday with the new members reporting tomorrow.

Band Camp at Ole Miss lasts for one week. A typical day's schedule includes practice from 9-11:30 outside, 2:30-4:00 inside and 6:00- 8:30 outside. When classes start on August 20th, the band will practice for 2-3 hours in the afternoon each day. They will learn 3-5 different shows each year.

This year the full band will travel to Memphis and Mississippi State. The pep-band will make trips to Vandy and Auburn. The band will not attend the Georgia game. It has been rumored for years that Georgia does not invite our band because of some of the songs we play. I have never confirmed that rumor. The band also marches in the Oxford Christmas Parade.

The band is a vital part of the game day experience at Ole Miss. They work hard and deserve our respect and money.

"Grew up with it and loved it - keeps the summer exciting more so than opening up with any other team. The fact that there is history there as the first game, provides a regular path to have some good hearted talk with some rebel fans. Its not as big of a deal anymore to me as it was in the late seventies and early eighties since we won two in a row with Tommy's teams and then were close in the following two - I guess because there was always a point to prove even if its for only one game a season. Probably similar to missisippi and LSU. We've opened with Miss St. before and while I looked forward to the game, the overall excitment was not there. Just fun to know there is a possobility to knock off mississippi and to know how that "ruins" so many Sunday mornings for rebels fans....you know..the walk to get the paper at the end of the drive feeling...yeah, that probably puts it best...knowing that walk to the paper on Sunday morning is potentially going to be painful is worth the 2 wins every ten years.
