SEC West, the Big XII of 2009?

I was looking through my new SI when I found SI's top 10 for 2009. I was excited that Ole Miss is #6 and ranked the highest in my lifetime. But then I realized that the SEC owns almost 50% of the SI's Top 10. There are four SEC teams in the top 10. (Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU) What's even more amazing is that the SEC West has three of the four SEC teams in the Top 10. Is there another division or even conference that can match up with the SEC West?

We all know the hype around the Big XII South this year. The hype stopped when the Big XII South went 1-3 in post season. Everyone assumed the Big XII South was the best division in college football. Of course they were wrong. Let's up this time the pundits have it right!

What a weekend!

This has been the biggest weekend for Ole Miss since, well since I've been alive. (35 years).

First, the university looked beautiful for the entire world to see at the debate last night. Then to top it all off we go down to the swamp and defeat the gators.

What can be said? Ole Miss, the world knows who we are now!

Yes, and the experience was great. I thought the coat/ties/dresses was a bit much for 90 degree days, but it was nothing a ton of bourbon couldn't cure. Certainly one of my top gameday experiences.-fishnchipper

Nope. Only thing I've heard about gameday came from people I used to know who went there for college. They described it as people getting pumped up early in the season (or early on in games) and then losing interest and going and getting drunk somewhere else.-CaneEmpire

Virginia:
Not many fans from Virginia took part in the survey. This was the smallest group of responses I've ever gotten. Of course part of it may have been due to the fact that I was denied access to the Scouth Virginia message board.

I don't really have feelings one way or another. UVA has never had any connection to Ole Miss at all, I've never been there, and I've only known one person who went to school there. I've been told that Ole Miss is to Mississippi State as UVA is to Virginia Tech, though.-HooPerk

I always like playing against BCS-affiliated teams that we have a reasonable shot at beating. Good for prestige and conference pride.-HooPerk

It's certainly the best conference in college football, though I don't believe the margin between it and the rest of the pack is as great as some make it out to be. I also have a real problem with the large number of programs in the SEC that play loosely with NCAA rules.HooPerk

I've never been, but I've heard about the pre-game tailgating on the quad with all the tents and everything. It sounds like a very cool environment. If we ever do schedule a football series with Ole Miss, I will probably try to go.-HooPerk

2-1: Ole Miss holds off Florida

As the second season of basketball moves into full swing, the Rebels are off to a 2-1 start in SEC play. The Rebels regrouped after a slow start to lead the Gators at half by 9. At one point the Rebs were up by 15 but Florida wouldn't go away. Poor foul shooting by Ole Miss gave Florida hope but the Rebels walked off the court with a 2 point victory over the 2x defending National Champs.

Florida fans' thoughts

I've received some e-mails from Florida fans about this past weekend's game. Here is what they are saying:

I made the trip to Oxford for the Gator game as a Gator fan and left a Rebel. Don't get me wrong I am still a Gator but felt a sense of belonging in Oxford. As far as the game goes I, like many Gators, were very impressed with the Rebels! That is quite a team you guys have up there in Oxford. The wins will come, especially if the Rebels keep playing with the "Show Me" attitude that says "you may be the defending National champs, but that was last year." The Rebels are just another reason why the SEC is the toughest conference in the County! Our conference is the closest thing Division 1 football has to a playoff system. Case in point, Auburn was the only team to beat Florida last year and Florida went on to beat the "best team in the country" for the national title. If you can make it out of the SEC then you deserve to play for the title. I'll be watching the Rebs from now on.Hotty Toddy,Lance


You Rebs are a CLASS ACT. We were made welcome everywhere we went. The Grove was a wonderful experience. The students were dressed up and polite. We watched the game from the west stands and had a great time. LSU, Tennessee, and Georgia could take a lesson (Gators too).

Close but...

Another close loss for the Rebels against a Top 25 team. There is a lot of discussion on moral victories on the chat boards. Some folks are sick of them, others are really proud of our team. I fall somewhere in between.
I am really proud of the way the Rebs played today. No one, not even the coaching staff's wives thought we could beat Florida. Florida averaged just over 55 points a game before today's game. 55 points! WOW. To hold them to 30 and have a chance to beat them in the end, I think anyone would take that scenario. It didn't work out. It hasn't worked out the last 4 or 5 times in these situations. But, folks, if we keep playing this way, it will happen.
Yes, I am disappointed in a loss. A win today would have been huge for our program. A close loss, while surprising, is a loss. However, after today, I feel much better about the season. I think we can snatch a win or two against teams we are not suppose to win. That coupled with a couple of wins against La Tech and Northwestern State will put us in good position on Egg Bowl day.

Lowly Ole Miss hopes Florida gets lost.

That is about our only chance, according to ESPN. Today they called us lowly, a few days ago they said the only thing Meyer has to worry about is getting lost in Oxford. Is it me or does it seem the media really loves to pick on us when we are down? Yes, I know, winning would take care of that. Or would it? I remember being called "runts" when we were co-SEC west champs with National Champion LSU in 2003.
Maybe I just pay more attention to Ole Miss, but I don't recall MSU, Notre Dame or other teams being treated this way by the media. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It's almost here, another Saturday. Here's to a Rebel miracle. Who is ready for the second coming of Ole Miss football? I am. But I don't think it's going to happen tomorrow. Still, I think we can make a lot of progress. If we can somehow stay close and make a game of it then it will give a lot of hope. Hope that maybe we will play up to our potential. Hope that we will turn the season around. Hope is about all we have right now. But, at least it's something.

Ole Miss. What can we say about Ole Miss? When we came up this blogswap idea, we thought about exchanging thoughts on the upcoming game and perhaps a few jabs at our opponents and their fans. All in the spirit of good fun, of course. But what to say about Ole Miss?Let's put it this way, both my co-blogger Mergz and I came up with the same thing: been to Oxford, nice town, other than that... we got nothing. What can be more deflating than knowing that there's no reason for us to hate you? That your presence on the schedule is seen as an automatic W for almost every other team in our league?Sorry, but it's true. I don't take in pleasure in that. Still that leaves me with nothing to say about Ole Miss. So here goes an attempt at a stream of consciousness:

Chucky Mullins. Sad. I was a student at Florida when he got hurt.Archie Manning. Unfortunately most of his QB genes went to Peyton.Rebels. How is it that Ole Miss can recruit a single black player with that nickname?Ron Zook. 0-3 against the State of Mississippi. A feat that will soon find you recruiting in the hinterlands of the great white north.Michael Oher and the Blind Side. Good book. Not as good as Moneyball but good.Ole Piss. Never heard anyone refer to your school that way, exception Internet message boards.I had a roommate from Oxford once. His father was an Ole Miss professor. He smelled. Bad.

I guess one thing I could do to cheer you guys up is pile on your in-state rival, Mississippi State. I had the misfortune of attending a conference once in Starkville. I turned on the faucet in the sink of my hotel room and the water coming out was the color of Coca-Cola. I called the front desk and explained that it seemed like unfiltered water was coming into my room directly from the mighty Mississippi river, complete with loads of sediment. The girl on the other end of the phone seemed amused. "That's the way the water is in Starkville." Note to self, never return to Starkville.

Actually, Ole Miss fans can take comfort in the fact that Florida actually trails Ole Miss in the series 9-11-1. But (and there's always a but) 7 of those 11 victories for the Rebels were before1959. 2 of the remaining 5 victories were against Gator teams that were (mis)led by the aforementioned Ron Zook. We don't count those years. If Florida were Russia we would have had Ron Zook's name removed from all the records and had him airbrushed out of all the team photographs. Steve Spurrier's Gators faced Ole Miss twice,winning both times. It's now up to Urban Meyer to return to the natural order of things and put the Rebels right back where they should have been all along, next to a penciled-in W on the Gators' schedule. The Vegas line for the game is 23 points.

Of course, having said all that, we probably just jinxed the crap out of ourselves. While losing to Ole Miss this year would be devastating, it would certainly give us a reason to hate you next year.

Nothing to Lose

The Florida Gators are slinking into Oxford this weekend. We are bleeding and they smell the blood. No one in their right mind believes that Ole Miss will defeat the Gators. Stranger things have happened.

In 2002, Florida came in to Oxford ranked #6. Ole Miss had given up tons of yards on defense the previous two games. Ole Miss defeated Florida. Here are a few clips of that game.





This year is much dimmer than 2002. Even though we didn't have a great defense, we had Eli and a decent offense. Yet, one can always hope.

Are you Ready?

It's Football Eve. We've been waiting a long time for tomorrow and it's almost here. The possibilities, the what if's, the chest pounding and the expectations will soon be replaced with reality.

There has been a lot of discussion on the message boards on how the Rebels will do this year. Many feel that with our tough schedule we will yet again be bowless at season end. Others, myself included ,see us as being a bit underrated. Will this be the year we win 6 and head back to Shreveport? I say YES.

Win 6, against who, you ask. Well let me tell you.

We will beat Memphis, Vandy, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern St & Miss. State. We will also beat at least one of the following teams at home: Missouri, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas or yes even LSU.

That's my Football Eve Prediction.

It's time Rebel fans. Game week is upon us. Before we hit the field and take on those Tigers, I thought I would take a look at our schedule for some interesting tidbits.

This year if you are not sure who we play, your best bet is to guess either a bulldog or a tiger and you will probably be right. We face off against four tiger teams and three bulldog teams. We also play some Demons, Commodores, Gators, Elephants and Pigs.

Our overall record against all the teams we play this year is W259 L 272 T 16. We've played Mississippi State the most at 103 times and Northeastern State the least at one game. We've played Memphis more times than we've played Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas or Auburn.

We play seven game at home and five away. Our closest away game is at Memphis (81 miles)while the greatest distance we will travel is to Athens, GA (409 miles).

So what do Rebel fans think of the Florida game? I recently asked a few questions to Rebel message boarders. Here are your responses:

(1)What are your predictions for the game?

I think we'll beat Florida. They will have just played Tennessee the week before in, perhaps, their biggest SEC East game of the year. They'll be playing Auburn and LSU the next two weeks so we should be overlooked. Also the game will be Tebow's first game as a starter away. --RanchReb

I can't begin to predict this one. Could be a close win or loss or blowout. Florida has a young defense coming in but they will be very athletic. If our QB play is reasonable, we might be able to match them. Our defense could be tougher up front than many expect but our back 7 will have some of the same problems as Florida-inexperience. I think Missouri is the "biggest" game of the year. I think how we perform in that game will give us an idea of how the season will go. If we can pull off a win or make it a close game since it is in Oxford, then I think we will have a successful (6-6 or better) season. --uncwj83

Florida is a good school and has become a sports juggernaut without scandals. They are a tough program to compete with. Any school that can take a national championship in two major men's sports in one year deserves some respect.--sampath

Unreasonable resentments, really. The town's not much. It's sort of a mismatch--all Florida has to do to be really good, having 2 to 5 times as much population as the other states in the SEC, is to accept a reasonable smattering of the in-state talent. Then there are idiots who want to go there because they picture great weather and the beach. (The beach isn't really close and the weather's miserably hot 10 months a year.) They get darling treatment from the national press. I hate the national press more than I dislike Florida, though.--GeorgePosey

Florida has an undue advantage when it comes to recruiting. They are in one of the fastest growing states in the nation. They have beaches on both coasts. They have a hotbed of talent in just about any sport from the Panhandle to South Beach. They are tops in so many sports from football to basketball to soccer to softball to you name it. If you are a recruit, how can you say no to great weather, beautiful women in skimpy outfits, beaches within a moments drive, the greatest tourist mecca and vacation spot in the world within a one hour drive, and the largest university in the SEC. Oxford is within 1 to 5 hours of the three most murderous cities in America (Memphis, Jackson(MS), and New Orleans). Is there any comparison?--cordovareb

Florida fans talk about Ole Miss v. Florida

I asked Gator fans about our game in September. Here is what they said:

Prediction: UF: 35 UM: 13--Leak's#1

Fairly early in the season, Florida makes a few mistakes on the road, but simply has too much talent for the Rebels to overcome. My guess is 32-21 Gators.--NoviG8r

Strengths: Playmakers at every position on offense (with depth)...Weaknesses: young, but VERY talented defense--Leak's#1

Strengths are Offensive Line, Wide Recievers, and Safeties. Overall, our offense should be hard to stop ... too much speed, too many playmakers, and Tebow (unlike the opinion of many) really can throw the ball. Weaknesses would be our Cornerbacks. Defense will be young but have great speed and talent.--NoviG8r

Strength is our offense no doubt about it. Mainly our WR's they are very very fast and have the potential to burn alot of DB's this year. Also one of our strength's is talent. We have ALOT of talent on both sides of the ball. Our weaknesses is 1. QB only because we dont know whats going to happen he doesnt have experience in CFB as the #1 guy. (but i am personally dont think its going to hurt us whatsoever.) 2. Defense - Our CB's are very inexperienced but very talented. Strengths in general are an experienced offensive line and talent all over the field on offense. We will be a high scoring, big play offense. Weaknesses are a big time RB (although Meyer is starting to speak highly of Kesthan Moore) and a very inexperienced but talented defense.--Pogfee

strengths - offense. tebow is a good /proper fit for the spread option. WR corps is lethal. will be a nightmare for DC's to scheme against. OL is maturing as a top notch unit. weaknesses - we still don't have a 'go to' big stud RB. why we're not attracting the top RB's is a mystery. we've got a few speedy/shifty ones....may have a coming out party this season at tailback. we'll see. another weakness - no leaders, we're very inexperienced and young. defense especially. CB is a concern but coach heater seems to work wonders coaching up guys to play DB/CB. middle of the DL is something to watch. if we're stout there, watch out! i think our young LB corps will surprise alot of folks too.--gatorbogey

(4) What do you respect about Ole Miss?

I grew up next door to a family of Ole Miss alums and have went to a few games at the Grove. I always really enjoyed myself at UM games. --Leak's#1

Respect is hard to say. The football program has really not accomplished much of anything in the last 40 years, and I'm not a big fan of Orgeron. There are things I like about the school and the town.--NoviG8r

ole miss is one of those classic sec 'traditional' schools/programs. good game day traditions that harken back to bye gone days. small town traditions, good manners and hospitality, etc . the girls live up to the legend about ole miss too.--gatorbogey

The only negative that comes to mind for me was that the powers at Ole Miss voted (after the fact) to strip UF of the '84 SEC title in the spring of '85. They didn't bother to do it for any schools in a similar situation before, or since.--NoviG8r

On the field, I think Orgeron is a clown, and really don't have much respect for your team. Please don't take that personally. I just think ED sucks. I think you can win at ole miss, maybe not like MNC winning, but 7-8 wins a year is realistic...but not with ed.--BigOleNastyGator

there isn't much to dislike, not a regular rival. only thing that worries me is that we don't seem to do well in starkville and oxford. we've had some troubles w/ the 'rotating' west foe....seems that when you aren't that familiar w/ the venue and foe, it causes some trouble. and the smallish Mississippi college towns may be a bit surreal for our players. maybe that's the problem. the cane fans think we're a bunch of "pig farmers" in gainesville, i wonder what they would think about oxford?--Gatorbogey
