SEC Sat.

There will not be a Rebel game tomorrow but there will be a multitude of SEC games that span the length of the day.

I'll start by watching some UK v. Miami of Ohio, which is being played here in Cincinnati but it isn't exciting enough for me to drag myself to the game. (especially with all the other games going on). I'll flip over occasionally to the UT game. Won't be much of a game but I want to see how they look. Then it's on to the Georgia game. I'll flip to the MSU game during commercials. Finally to cap it off I'll catch the Alabama, VTU game. Oh and I guess I'll catch some of the LSU game.

SEC West, the Big XII of 2009?

I was looking through my new SI when I found SI's top 10 for 2009. I was excited that Ole Miss is #6 and ranked the highest in my lifetime. But then I realized that the SEC owns almost 50% of the SI's Top 10. There are four SEC teams in the top 10. (Florida, Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU) What's even more amazing is that the SEC West has three of the four SEC teams in the Top 10. Is there another division or even conference that can match up with the SEC West?

We all know the hype around the Big XII South this year. The hype stopped when the Big XII South went 1-3 in post season. Everyone assumed the Big XII South was the best division in college football. Of course they were wrong. Let's up this time the pundits have it right!

Bama week

After a difficult loss and a long off week it's time to once again get fired up. This week we have the chance to play giant killer as we invade Tuscaloosa this Sat.
After the last few season, we should be happy at being 3-3 this point in the season. But, I, along with many others are not happy with 3-3. I believe we should be 6-0, at best 5-1. We can't live in the past. We must press on. Our goal should always be to win the SEC. Yet, after the past few seasons getting to a bowl game this year would be quite an accomplishment.

SEC's Top 10 games for 2008

With football just over a month away, I decided to take a look at the SEC schedule this year for the most exciting games. Here are my top 10 games.

(10) Auburn v. LSU- Should be the SEC West game of the year.

(9) Ole Miss v. MSU- AHHH revenge is sweet.

(8) Tennessee v. UCLA- Tennessee is making it's California rounds.

(7) Alabama v. Tennessee- Usually an exciting game.

(6) Arkansas v. Texas- Arkansas and Texas bring back the old SWC rivalry.

(5)Alabama v. Auburn- Will Saban stop the Tommy Curse?

(4)Georgia v. Arizona State- This will be a good SEC- Pac 10 matchup.

(3)Florida v. Georgia- This will be the game of the SEC East this year. I'm just glad that we only have to play one of them this year.

(2) Auburn v. West Virginia- One of the SEC's big boys plays THE Big East Big Boy.

(1) Ole Miss v. Arkansas- This will be billed as Houston Nutt's homecoming. Even if both teams haven't won a game this will be exciting.

ESPN discusses "the play". This was a pretty fair assessment of the situation.

CBS throws out the suggestion that Ole Miss should have Faulkner as our new mascot. -- Let me think about this idea for awhile and get back to you.

Refs, Bama beat Ole Miss by 3

Not much to say at this point. The Ole Miss players played their hearts out to come up short again. Of course, Bama was aided by the review officials in the booth. By rule it should have been Ole Miss ball with a chance to win or tie with a field goal. Even if he stepped out of bounds on his own, Bama touched the ball first. Therefore, Ole Miss ball with a chance to win.

Its time to beat Bama Blue

We've only beaten Bama Blue 8 times since the late 1800's. There have been a lot of close games but in realty we are to them what Vandy is to us. The Bama game is usually one of our biggest games of the year. I would put it third on the list behind LSU & MSU. Of course to hear a Bama fan talk they are out biggest game of the year. (A bit inflated but not unusual considering the source.)

I was born in Huntsville and grew up in Tennessee , a few miles (spitting distance) from the Alabama border. I had to endure Bama, Auburn and Tennessee fans growing up in the late 70's- early 90's. We only beat Bama once during that time that I can remember. It was a good one, the year that the Bear Bryant museum was dedicated. Shortly after that victory, bricks went flying and one ended up in the coaches office. He was gone after that year. I also remember the year we went up 21-0 over Bama and lost the game 62-21.

A friend of mine here in Ohio asked me who to pick in the Ole Miss v. Bama game. I said, I think we have a great shot of beating Bama but you might want to go with history. I told her the series record and she said, I'm going with Bama. I couldn't blame her.

Oddly enough it seems that we always feel as though we have a good shot at Bama but end of losing in the end. We should be use to losing to Bama and I suppose we are.

8 times in 50+ tries... It blows my mind. I am a glutton I suppose but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Q&A with The Tide Druid

The Tide Druid was kind enough to answer a few questions about Alabama and this week's game.

(1) How do you evaluate QB Parker up to this point in the season?

If you look at his stats alone, he hasn't done horrible: 8 TDs passing, 3 TDs rushing with 1200 + yards and 4 interceptions. But, he just hasn't been able to play a consistently good game. He does have a bad habit of staring down his main targets. He is also prone to throwing off of his back foot when pressured, which usually ends up with Alabama punting. Most people want to blame him more than anyone else on the offensive side of the ball. Still, he has been able to score when it comes to crunch time. He's great with a no huddle or 2 minute offense. With the regular offensive play calling, he is adequate.

(2) How about your young O-Line, how are they doing so far?

They've been both good and bad at times. When they have given Wilson protection, we've been able to move the ball. But, they've also been a little to comfortable, allowing more pressure than a group this talented should. Andre Smith is a stud, but has been a little inconsistent at times, as have the others. Expect a new set up for the O-line on Saturday. Justin Britt's mother had a car accident (she'll be ok), so he probably won't play since he's been with his family most of the week. Antoine Caldwell (center) will be moved around as Evan Cardwell takes his place.

(3) What do you think the keys are to a Bama victory?

Ball control by the offense. Though our defense is thin, we've been playing better than most people expected. The problem is that our offense has a tendency to go 3 and out for long stretches of time, forcing our already thin defense to stay out on the field way too long. They end up tired when it matters. This would help to explain such events as the Arkansas comeback, the last FSU score, and the Houston comeback.

(4) What concerns you the most about Ole Miss this weekend?

My biggest concern is that Ole Miss comes out like they have something to play for, while Alabama comes out flat again. If we get behind quickly, I don't know how we'll react on the road.

(5) What's your prediction for the game?

The national nail bitters association should have a field day with this one. Alabama will either start hot, or end with a sudden offensive flourish after struggling most of the game. Ole Miss should be able to move the ball more as the game goes on. Both teams will have their fair share of mistakes I'm sure. To be honest, this game will probably come down to who keeps their mistakes to a minimum in the 2nd half. I think Alabama is capable of winning, but I'm not sure if they will.

Top 3 Ole Miss v. Alabama games

(1) 1969: Alabama 33 Ole Miss 32-Archie Manning set a single-game SEC record with 540 total yards with the Ole Miss record of 436 yards passing. This was the first prime time regular season telecast of a college football game. I wasn't alive for this game but I've heard the story of this game over and over.

(2) 1988: Ole Miss 22 Alabama 12- Ole Miss defeated Bama on their homecoming and the day the Bear Bryant museum was dedicated.

(3) 2001: Ole Miss 27 Alabama 24- This was the first victory for Ole Miss after a long drought that dated back to the 1988 victory.

It's Bama Week

Rebel fans have always been infatuated with Alabama. Maybe it's because we have only beaten them 9 times in 54 tries. (Yes there were two ties). Maybe it's because some Rebel fans feel that Alabama fans are a bit arrogant and dismissive towards Rebel fans. Regardless, this is a team we always "get up" for.

Despite the lopsided win-loss stat in this series most games have been competitive. The last two were very close. I don't expect any different Saturday. Well, I hope we come out on the winning side this time.

Game Day: Vandy

Get the Pep-Band warmed up, your best Ole Miss cap on and get ready to dismantle the Dores. It's game time. All the talk and smack is over. It's time to play the game.

So what's hot on the message boards?

There is some discussion on both Ole Miss boards that Palmer may not play today. This worries Rebel fans as he has been a bright spot in the otherwise dim defense.

Vandy fans are hoping that there are more Vandy fans than Ole Miss fans. Last week they said that there were more Bama fans than Vandy fans at the game. Most Vandy fans are predicting a win by 7-14 points. Bama fans are wishing Vandy luck and hoping that they beat Ole Miss.

Are you Ready?

It's Football Eve. We've been waiting a long time for tomorrow and it's almost here. The possibilities, the what if's, the chest pounding and the expectations will soon be replaced with reality.

There has been a lot of discussion on the message boards on how the Rebels will do this year. Many feel that with our tough schedule we will yet again be bowless at season end. Others, myself included ,see us as being a bit underrated. Will this be the year we win 6 and head back to Shreveport? I say YES.

Win 6, against who, you ask. Well let me tell you.

We will beat Memphis, Vandy, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern St & Miss. State. We will also beat at least one of the following teams at home: Missouri, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas or yes even LSU.

That's my Football Eve Prediction.

The game that got delayed by lightning. Dou Innocent was having an awesome game. We had that game won, and an official called us for roughing the kicker when the Bama guy pushed us into the kicker. Bama took advantage and won. The Gary Abide game when OM was controlling the game until Barker got hurt and Deuce Palmer came in at QB. There was one play where Palmer ran backwards 15 yards, went to one side of the end zone where OM almost had him for a safety, juked some guy out, then went to the other side of the end zone, and ended up running 30 yards downfield for a first down. Needless to say Bama came back and won.And, of course, I think it was '01 when we beat Bama for the first time in a long time. It was raining, Chris Collins made an awesome catch on third down to keep a drive alive. Very memorable.--JaySuede

The 1969 game would probably take the cake (Archie v. Hunter), and the 1989 game would be a good one too; that was one of the weirdest games you'll ever see. The 2002 crushing of Eli was pretty sweet too.--Chimes05

LSU. I used to love going to the games in Baton Rouge. Nothing like the atmosphere at a night game and for years LSU played at no other time. The party before the game was astounding and it was the only stadium I've ever walked into that you get a buzz on just by breathing deep. Tony Barnhart of the AJC ranks BenJarvus Green-Ellis as the # 3 SEC rusher. In his article entitled "Ranking the SEC's top rushers" he says: " Ran for 1,000 yards on a really, really, really bad offense. He is only the third player in Ole Miss history to run for over 1,000 yards in a season. He is tough runner who gets a lot of yards on his own. If the Rebels can throw it just a little bit, Green-Ellis is going to have another big year. "

The Camden Chronicle has a story on Patrick Wills and his signing with the 48's. They mistakenly calls us "Ole Miss University". In the article entitled :"Willis signs with 49ers", they interview his high school coach who says: “Everyone around Central High School is proud of him and proud for him,” said Rod Sturdivant, Willis’ former high school football coach and Director of Schools for Hollow Rock-Bruceton Special School District. “He is very deserving of everything that comes his way,” he added. "

Bama fans are encouraging each other to buy Ole Miss v. Alabama single tickets from our ticket office. On BamaMag.com, lauderdale6388 says : "The demand from donor's, boosters, etc. must not have been high this year. When I spoke to the guy at the Ole Miss ticket office this morning he said that several single game tickets (including Bama) are available and he said my order would be mailed to me around August 20th.
